Old Media to New Shades?

You know that saying, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”  So true!!  We just started weeding our slide collection a couple of weeks ago here at Dominican University.  A lot of the slides were in terrible condition.  Discolored and faded.  Really, they were no good anymore.  We had to get rid of them.  I mean we had over 10,000 slides that were no longer circulating!!!

Yet, deep down inside I didn’t want to throw them away.  I knew that they still had some life left in them.  And sure enough…

This lamp shade was created using art and architecture slides from our collection.  One of my Media Center Student Assistants created this over the weekend and brought it in for display.

We posted a flyer on the Dom News Bulletin and posted some signs in the Media Center and can you believe that people actually came!  Amazing!  So if you have slides that you were thinking of tossing out think twice.  Maybe you too can make a lamp shade of your own!  Talk about recycling!

This is not an orginal design (well, at one point it was).  In fact if you Google it you can find a couple of Websites that provide some instructions on how to make your own.  Check it out!
