Very delayed comment, but just seeing this now. I never thought about putting my resume up through Wordle before. Very neat. It's definitely helpful in seeing what words are mentioned a lot and how that could look to those reading it. Awesome idea. Hope everything's going well!

Thanks for the honest review. I will NOT checking out this book as it seems like a waste of time. What are your suggestions for good books on drug abuse for teens?

I love the story. And I missed the character like Jem and Atticus when I finished reading the book. Wondering what will become to these characters if there is continuity to the story. I think the whole idea of the story is to treat other people equally regardless of their skin color and standard of living. And also not to harm the animals.
This book was inspired by the life experiences of the author. It’s worth reading

Beth: Where do you come from? I am a 69 year old man with a wife and three children. My Stolpman ancestors (Prussian) are from Rosen, MN. My father's name was Bernard Stolpman and his father was Marcus Stolpman. Are you part of the Victor Stolpman group from St. Cloud.

There are Stolpman's in St. Cloud that are in my wider family. The male in the St. Cloud family was Wilfred (Bud) Stolpman (deceased). He left 4 children: Rick, Kathy, Jeanne, and Paula. A fifth child died in childhood. Do you know them?

I have 3 children: David, Jennifer and Sarah. They all live in Minneapolis. David is a physician, Jennifer is a marketing manager with General Mills, and Sarah is a patent attorney. They are all married. I have 5 grandchildren.

Please let me know where you fit into the Stolpman diaspora.

Thanks, Ron Stolpman

I would definitely give this to girls or boys, but in that 12 to 13 year old range. I remember picking this up as a 12 year old, and it was too long for my attention span, but I was open to enjoying it at that age. Now, I enjoy some sci-fi/fantasy elements in books, but this just wasn't for me. :/

Wow, I must be a 12-13 year old boy. Okay, maybe not. It's true that I love Tolkein, but I haven't reread The Hobbit as much as I have The Lord of the Rings. If you're not a big sci-fi reader, then Tolkein might not be the best starting point, but don't discourage girls from reading this. Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean there aren't girls who will. I don't think that I'm the only exception to the rule. So keep an open mind when making recommendations.

Did you find the voice unrealistic for a teen? It seemed way to forced to me. Also it read like a bad After School Special. It felt like the author was trying to scare teens straight. You're right in saying that it fails in this. If you get the opportunity the movie of this book features William Shatner and Andy Griffith. I think that pretty much says it all.

Nice!! I didn't really think about it, since they were very well-drawn characters, but you're right. :)

I've read this book, and between this one and "Free Land"--which is also by Lane--I prefer "Let the Hurricane Roar". I think it's curious that Rose did not give Charles and Caroline last names in the book, but she did to the other characters.

Since you mentioned the ongoing controversy about Rose's contribution to the "Little House" books, I don't know if you would be interested in reading "Ghost in the Little House" by William Holtz. The author's intention is to prove that Lane co-wrote the books. I did a rather extensive review of Holtz's book as I read it because I held off reading his book for so long because I wanted to approach it with an open mind.

But just as Holtz attempts to convince readers that Rose should be credited as co-author, LIW biographer John E. Miller provides evidence in his books that makes it seem unlikely that Rose did anything other than edit the books.

I'm glad you enjoyed "Let the Hurricane Roar". It does have that "Little House" feel to it that lets you feel like you're in familiar territory.
